This is one of the major themes of my book "Our Country Then and Now." The crimes of the mass media are legion. COVID is among the worst. We are looking at a massive death cult.

I've bought your book and look forward to reading it, should it arrive before British society collapses completely.

Is that the drive? I have often wondered why the media class back issues that will damage them and their own kids never mind the country. What is going on there?

I think the world that educated them, allowed them to succesful middle class people, was one they trusted and they still think exists. The BBC etc are still referenced in arguements. I have refained from arguing too strongly to date as they are nice bunch and i am still the new boy.

The television educated them, and they grew up with the Reithian BBC and Kenneth Clarke's "Civilisation". The Britain that has gone did not follow the United States into Vietnam, would televise the ideas of Isaiah Berlin and would feature Oswald Mosley speaking to David Frost. It was of course demographically British.

It is simply too painful to admit that the values they still hold dear have been dead for decades, replaced with the administration of society by despotic elite whose many techniques of pacification include the abuse of history to secure a sense of national pride in what amounts to national suicide.

I would not advise the destruction of your friendship circle with the aggressive correction of these consolations. I tell my children the worst thing you can do is tell the truth about someone to their face. Perhaps the second worst is to tell them their ideas are nonsense.

Men believe things not because they are true but because they are useful. The future of any culture relies in large part on whether men are capable of living without lullabies, which is the measure of their willingness to wake from the dreams they prefer to the challenges of reality.

If you must have a go, I would suggest questions and not answers. "Why do you believe that?" is a device that may excavate the unexploded bomb without attaching your name to the subsequent detonation. It is likely you will still be seen as a terrorist in their Endymion.

I have been attending a social group that discusses philosophical topics. Meeting in the middle of the day, and considering the somewhat dry nature of the topics it is exclusively attended by retirees, no one is under 60, many are ex professionals in science, engineering medicine etc. Let me assure you 90% of these people believe ALL of the mainstream media lies. Staggering and depressing. Mr Wright your work here is much appreciated.

Thank you and I’m glad I could help. I don’t want to go overboard with the footnotes - there are far more in the next parts - but I think it is important to point to ideas beyond the television which offer a fuller picture of reality.

I know plenty of learned and successful news believers myself. Many such cases.

Really? I assume these are otherwise decent, ordinary people. And they sound educated.

What is the reason? Is it accepting the corporate media content uncritically? Do they not look beyond that, perhaps online?

I found Substack during Covid because I was actively searching on lockdowns, masks, rushed vaccines etc. Absolutely none of it made any sense, and the propaganda just triggered every alarm in my head.

I don't think such a demonizing thing could work so well nowadays. I recall my grandpa telling me of his loathing of Germans until he talked to one through the fence at a PoW camp. He eventually learned twinkle little star with a perfect accent, thought he might have been an escaped SS cadet for a while because of that. Enough people are worried about being 'righteous' in their hate that they will reach out to verify that the bad guys are, indeed, bad.

You can do that nowadays. The source of the propaganda, as well, has never been less trusted. This is one of those things that technology may have altered irrevocably. Just as there is no more rear and front line distinctions in war, there is no more protected propaganda from friendly public and enemy state scrutiny.

There is considerable doubt abroad after covid, and with the obvious difficulty in consistent messaging over Israel - and all the other wars.

I do think there is something akin to a broad disenchantment underway, even if that does not quite reach into complete rejection of the status quo. This is a process that cannot be reversed by propaganda, which requires belief to function.

I'm going to disagree! Most of the people I know still believe what they are told by the BBC - they believe the Trusted News Initiative and Marianna Spring are proof that the BBC is still the bastion of honest reporting they always believed it was. They still believe that The Times is the unbiased voice of neutrality, the Daily Telegraph the clear voice of conservative values and The Guardian the voice of the freedom loving Left. These people also believe that Joe Biden is just a bit too old, Donald Trump is Mad and Bad and Vladimir Putin is Actual Hitler as well as being Mad and Bad. They still believe the jabs are Safe and Effective, that Covid was a Near-Death Experience and that Climate Catastrophe is just around the corner. Absolutely no hope at all (and, Frank, sorry but only one of them - the most rabid believer in all that - is a practising Christian)

So true.... the idea that an organisation (the BBC) comprising a workforce of circa 25K Labour/Lib Dem voters and maybe 100 Tory voters (plus a vast hinterland of bien pensant lefty news and drama satellites) could possibly ever have been 'impartial' is an insult to the intelligence. The fact that they have got away with it for so long is testament to how little real intellectual curiosity the average tv viewer really has. The BBC's 'impartiality' grift has caused more information-manipulation and tendentiousness in British society than all the politicians and political party politics put together. The only crumb of comfort is that it seems to be withering along with its boomer primary viewership (a bit like M&S!) https://grahamcunningham.substack.com/p/non-binary-sibling-is-entertaining

Save us from BBC Chin Lady.

Yes, stuffers - there are many believers and I do not deny it. I do think that belief is leaking however. Some are lost forever, broken by television into making excuses for reality. News believers will always be with us. It is important to come up with better news for them.

The failure to mobilize the western citizen against Gazans would appear to support your point. Whatever the truth of those events, they were pitched as an atrocity to be avenged. I strongly suspect the regimes were surprised by the pushback.

There is good reason to be suspicious of the “counter-jihad” on the so-called right, and one is that it replaces one foreign influence with another. It is a very undesirable model to import, as recent events have shown.
